HARBOURFRONT CENTRE Spaces for living can come from various environments, and increasingly the desire to live downtown is often reconciled with a less than ideal lot. mid-block discusses the idea of infill housing as small insertions into a dense urban fabric. The unique site conditions of these properties are associated with difficult issues such as reduced size, view, privacy from your neighbor, access and legal challenges. Without a traditional streetscape, exterior facades become less important. mid-block explores creative ways to introduce light into an enclosed space and thereby form new connections to the outdoors. The system's on axis frequency response is flat within +/- 1.7 dB from 100 Hz to 20 kHz, which is excellent by anyone's standards. Its form, scale, and materiality are an expression of the loss and memory of an individual from a family, from a police force, and from a community. In this light, the memorial is presented as a whole, made up of interlocking, unique pieces that remains impossible to complete : one of them cannot be put back in its place. Its mirror like surface powerfully makes the viewer aware of their own presence in relation to the missing piece, as well as to the greater puzzle of the city that fills the reflection. The fourteen foot long by thirty foot high polished stainless steel structure is a monumental portrait. Securely mounted eight inches off of the designated wall by a modular steel frame, the memorial responds to its location by asserting a distinct place along an expansive surface. And yet, reaching up over the edge of the wall, it shows itself to be greater than this wall -- any wall -- against which it is placed. Made from a natural, durable material, the 97 reflective stainless steel pieces are arranged to have a small gap between each other. These gaps, as well as the absent piece would be illuminated at night with LED’s, powered by solar panels. Both frame and panels are recyclable. Individual pieces allow for ease of fabrication, installation, and future relocation if necessary. No toxic finishes will be used.
